PricewaterhouseCoopers has been named one of the top 10 employers for lesbian, gay and bisexual people by influential lobbying group Stonewall.

The accountancy giant shared the ninth spot on the Workplace Equality Index 2008 with Brighton and Hove City Council. Each year the index ranks the organisations that scored the highest marks on a survey designed to measure equality in the workplace.

PwC has improved its ranking massively from last year when it was number 51. In comparison, the Big Four firm's rival KPMG saw its ranking drop from joint eighth to number 29.

Deloitte, which did not even feature on last year's survey, came in at number 38 on the index. Meanwhile Ernst & Young, which was ranked 96 last year, achieved joint 78th spot.

Among the areas covered by the survey are diversity policies, diversity training, board champions, monitoring of sexual orientation during recruitment and staff support such as mentoring and counselling.
