Deloitte & Touche Consulting has bagged a mega enterprise resource planning (ERP) advisory job from the Steel Authority of India (SAIL). The consulting company won the engagements at SAIL's central marketing organisation (CMO) as well as its corporate office.

Two other leading consultants, KPMG and PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) were also in the fray, but lost out in the final round.

The projects involve identification of improvement opportunities for the ERP-enabled processes, creation of application architecture, rollout and sourcing strategies, programme and change management.

The job at SAIL's corporate office involves ensuring that SAP rollouts at individual plants and business units comply with the policies and standards defined centrally.

"We will work in the area of ERP advisory services both at SAIL's central marketing organisation and its corporate office," Deloitte & Touche Consulting India managing director Roopen Roy said.

The steel major is in the midst of a Rs 40,000-crore expansion programme to raise its hot metal capacity at its existing units from 14 million tonnes to 22.5 million tonnes by 2010-11.

The project will span SAIL's integrated steel plants at Bokaro, Bhilai, Durgapur and Rourkela and its special steel units at Salem and Durgapur. SAIL also has captive mining operations for iron ore, coal and limestone.

Deloitte, a dominant player in the global metals industry, serves a large number of clients in the metal industry and has an expert group that caters to the specific needs of the metal industry. It counts among its clients the likes of the world's largest steel company ArcelorMittal, Tata Steel, Corus, Vedanta and JSW Steel.
